Good reasons why India’s North-easteners are treated as aliens in their country

By admin • Jul 27th, 2007 • Category: FYI only

Things are changing fast for good or worse, it is a time to speak out from the remote part on Northeast. Here is my take on why North-easterners are treated as aliens in their motherland:

Whatever others from central India said are just their thinking and guessing thoughts. Mine could be genuine one since I am the one who faces the problem whenever I am in central India:

Have a look the points below - they will be modified as per the mood changes… lolz…

1. Language barrier: I feel that this is the most troubling part. If you don’t know the language it is very difficult to mingle with so-called mainstream people, especially in north India suddenly while speaking, chit-chatting they often jump to Hindi dialogue and stuffs are this poor NE fellow is completely loss. That’s why NE find much more comfortable in the South. In this aspect Manipuris can gel better with others as they usually command good Hindi than their counterparts in other NE states.

Another example could be many landlords in Delhi, who do not speak English and when students from NE stay with them miscommunication often happened leading to an uncomfortable positions for both the party.

2. Appearance, Look : NE people being Mongoloid stocks just look different and often misunderstood them as Nepali or Chinese. Some people wanted to call them Chinky, Chinkie, Chinki, etc. Many hates this word. Though some have understood that it is not demeaning to be referred that way.

Calling them Nepali could mean a degoratory word for many in the Northeast where many poor Nepalis work as domestic helps, cow-herds (70%) and un-skilled labourers, etc. In Mizoram, cow-herd and Nepalis are often referred as one. They called ‘Bawngpu’ meaning Cow-herd.  And I  already feel sorry for our Nepali friends as well. But things are changing in this aspect too. Nepali itself is not a bad word but one should understand the context, much like ‘are you a Bihari?’ - a good counter-word NE people often use to North Indian guys with ‘an equal and opposite reaction’ whenever the famed Newton’s Law is applicable.

You cannot change the look of a person which is in-born, you have to accept them as they are.

3. Attitude of the local people: Once again, North Indians are quite different. They seem to be crazy after Whites, unless one is from Far-east, near east and others they mostly consider them equal with them and as such they try to compete with them and dominate them. And therefore, they will do anything to pull those people down, from the way they speak, body language, etc, whereas, Whites are highly respected everywhere in the North. This attitude too is applied to NE people, whom they usually try to dominate simply because they consider them as their competitor or those below them. In this case, South India scenario is completely different. In South, NE people feel very comfortable and welcomed. They seem to have appreciated outsiders whoever they are. Africans too are more comfortable in the South.

4. Media : Media hardly covers Northeast news except kidnap in Manipur or bomb blast elsewhere in Nagaland-Manipur border. More to come….

More points will be added soon.
