India urge to stop supporting Burmese junta


New Delhi, Sept. 24 (Khonumthung News) - Over 300 Burmese pro-democracy activists in exile including over 100 primary students from Burma living in India held anti-India protests near the Parliament in New Delhi today.

Burmese demonstrators urged India not to give assistance to the Burmese military regime which brutally cracked down on protesters and abused its own people.

Burmese pro-democracy activists in India expressed their disappointment and said that the largest democracy in the world is still supporting the Burmese junta paying no heed to the outcry of protesters in Burma.

Petroleum Minister of India Murli Deora yesterday arrived in Naypidaw, the new administrative capital of Burma meet the regime for extracting natural gas and investing in offshore gas fields in Burma even as thousands of monks and people held anti-junta demonstrations on the streets across the country.

“It is a shame that an Indian Minister is meeting the regime for its own interest while international community expresses concern over the unrest in Burma”, Kim, coordinator from Shwe Gas Movement in India said.

Tang Jiaxuan, a Chinese senior diplomat has called for Myanmar to speed up democratic reforms in Burma during Burma’s Foreign Minister U Nyan Win’s visit to China in the second week of September.

However, Pranab Mukherjee, India’s External Affairs Minister told the US ambassador to Thailand and British diplomats in Thailand that India will not interfere in Burma’s domestic affairs since India’s foreign policy does not allow interference.

Mukherjee also denied to the US and British diplomats that India was supplying military hardware to regime in Burma.

Debaran Jan from All India Forward Bloc who joined the demonstration also criticized India’s foreign policy towards Burma that openly favours the regime and suggested India change its stance.
