Rare Burma pro-democracy rally in Mizoram

October 2, 2007 - Over 600 Mizos and Burmese activists joined hands today and held a rare rally calling it ‘Mizoram for democracy in Burma’ on the streets of Aizawl, capital of Mizoram state, northeast India.
The rally to express solidarity for the people’s movement in Burma was organized by Human Rights Law and Network (HRLN), a non-government organization in Mizoram.
“As a neighbour of Burma, we support the struggle for restoration of democracy and the protests by monks and supporters against the military regime in Burma,” Pi Vanramchhungi, leader of HRLN said.
Leaders from Mizo political parties such as th Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC), Mizoram Congress Party (MCP) and Zoram National Party (ZNP), Mizo student organizations and other Mizo civil society groups also joined the peaceful procession condemning the close ties between India and the authoritative Burmese regime.
Lal Muanpuia (Phunte), former president of Mizo Zirlai Pawl (Mizo Student Organization) involved in organising the rally said, “We wish the protests in Burma a success so that democracy can be restored in the near future.”
Lal Muanpuia also said that they call on the people from other states in northeast India to organize similar rallies to express solidarity with the people of Burma protesting against the repressive Burmese junta in which several monks and supporters have been killed and arrested by security forces.
The General Secretary of the Young Mizo Association also voiced their support for democracy in Burma. – Khonumthung.
