Kaladan project to facilitate direct trade in pulses
By admin • Apr 7th, 2008 • Category: India NewsNEW DELHI: Pulses worth over Rs 1,400 crore imported from Myanmar via Singapore will be shipped directly to Chennai and Kolkata with the completion of the Rs 535-crore Kaladan multi-modal transport project between India and Myanmar.
“Pulses from Myanmar are going to Singapore and then coming to India. Once this project is implemented, India will get pulses directly from Myanmar to Chennai, Vishakapatnam and Kolkata,” Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said on the sidelines of a FICCI function.
The two countries yesterday inked the agreement for implementation of the Kaladan project, which will link north eastern states to Myanmar.
“I believe we should take this (direct trade) forward,” Myanmar Minister Tin Naing Thein, present at the function, said.
Though the Kaladan project is slated to be completed in five years, the two sides expect its implementation a year ahead of schedule.
The project will give a boost to the bilateral trade of 900 million dollars at present.
India is a major importer of pulses, which are presently witnessing a huge rise in prices. Myanmar on the other hand is a leading producer of the commodity, which contribute half of its exports to India.
Both sides also agreed to expand trade basket from the current 22 items and explore the possibility of setting up more centres of trade.

…just wondering the reaction of the Gov’t of Mizoram… not so sure, but they might be jealous over this news!
They should be happy because instead of using Singapore as transit for importing pulses from Myanmar, India can now import them directly from Myanmar through Mizoram. Manipur is opted out simply because terrorists will hamper any development there. From Sittwe it will come through Kaladan river to Kawlchaw (Kaochao) between Lawngtlai and Saiha (Siaha). This is good news for Mizo and Chin people too.
