A minor Burmese girl raped in Mizoram

Khonumthung News (August 4, 2008) - Ruata (30) from Manipur allegedly raped Mawi (12) from Burma in Aizawl, capital of Mizoram state in northeast India on Friday. Mizo police arrested the accused.

On August 1 at around 5:30 pm Ruata (real name) was said to have coaxed Mawi (name changed) and taken her to an isolated place in the outskirts of the town, where the accused raped the minor Burmese girl, according to a Burmese close to the victim.

The victim Mawi, studying in class VI stays with her parents in a rented house in Chammari west of Aizawl.

“I noticed that my daughter looked sad and seemed to be frightened by something when she came back home at around 7 pm. I asked her what was wrong but she said nothing but started crying,” said her father.

Mawi revealed everything after her father asked her repeatedly.

“Only after I asked her many times did she say that she was raped by our neighbour,” Mawi’s father added.

As soon as Mawi’s father realized that his daughter had been raped he filed a case in the Aizawl police station.

The girl was taken to hospital and underwent a medical check up. The result of the check up confirmed that Mawi had been raped.

Aizawl police arrested the acccused on August 1 night and detained him at Aizawl police station.

According to relatives of Mawi, the victim has a mental problem because she fell down from a building when she was eight years old.

Mawi’s parents are from Kalay town in Sagaing division of Burma. She was born in Mizoram state.
