‘No Mautam in Mizoram’ : Mizoram minister
By admin • Sep 11th, 2008 • Category: Mizoram NewsAizawl | September 10 : Mizoram’s Food & Civil Supplies Minister K Sangthuama has claimed that his department has received no report of famine in the state and also that an angry mob had gathered in the streets of Aizawl to show their grievances over the government for its failure to battle the famine. This is contrary to Media reports of a ‘Mautam’ (famine) in Mizoram state.
The minister made this claim in his statement to MLA F Lalthanzuala who stated that there have been numerous reports of famine in Mizoram including his constituency, Hnahthial.
The minister said that the state has 1, 83,618.84 quintals of rice in various supply go-downs in the state and the rice stock ‘is enough to last a month’. The minister also responded to questions raised by Tlungvel MLA Lalchhandama Ralte on whether there have been any report of deaths due to the famine. The food minister said there have been no reports as such.
K Sangthuama added that 149719.33 quintals of rice were distributed for free during the month of July-August alone and 174416 families earning less than Rs. 10,000 a month have been given free rice ration during this period.
