Shillong’s Lou ‘Bob Dylan’ Majaw sings for Mizo famine victims

AIZAWL: It was a concert for a cause — to help the famine victims of Mizoram. Famous singer Lou Majaw’s band Great Society, 4th Element, Felix Ranee and the students of Mizo Modern Higher Secondary School, Shillong, sang for the Mizos affected by mautam (famine) caused by bamboo flowering, at a concert here last evening.

The musical extravaganza with the slogan: “Give and receive, help a fellow man” though did not attract a huge audience, did enthuse music lovers who assembled at the Anton Hall on St Anthony’s School premise.

The entire proceeds from the concert will be handed over to the Young Mizo Association (YMA), central body, Aizawl.

Lou Majaw sang original numbers of Great Society.

The organisers considered that the slogan was apt considering the suffering of the people of Mizoram caused by bamboo flowering.

The band members reminded the audience of the need to help the poor.

“The famine victims of Mizoram are our brothers and sisters and we need to help them on humanitarian ground,” Majaw said.

The whole idea of organising the concert was put forward by Majaw and Mizo Modern Higher Secondary School agreed to support the cause.

Majaw, however, deplored the attitude of the ministers and legislators of Meghalaya who were not forthcoming in assisting the cause.

“When we requested the legislators and others who are rich to take the donor cards of Rs 500, many were reluctant.”

The singer voiced concern over the Mizoram government’s inadequate help to the mautam-hit families. According to Majaw, the government should be ashamed as his band Great Society and the music lovers have taken the initiative to help the famine-affected people.

Majaw hoped to organise similar non-commercial events for a cause provided he got support from all quarters.

He was peeved at the thin attendance at Anton Hall though he was glad that his band could do something for the cause of suffering humanity.
