Muntader al-Zaidi has an opportunity to do a whole lot of good right now if he plays his cards right. Regardless of the controversy over whether President Bush deserved it or not is irrelevant. The simple truth is it was the wrong thing to do and I believe he understands that now.
I’ve been appalled by all the praise this guy has been getting and even more appalled that once again barbarism is being rewarded with tumult in the streets. However with that said Muntader al-Zaidi appears to be repentant and is not all too happy about being considered a hero for his actions. It would be a breath air if he were to address the world by decrying what he did and further decry the kind of barbarism we’ve seen exhibited in the Arab world for so long. Killing over cartoons, tumult in the streets over throwing a shoe at ahead of state etc… He currently has the world’s attention and I can think of no better way to serve humanity in this case that to allow this man to speak out in this regard and then for the U.S. President and the Iraqi government to show mercy and pardon him.
If he apologize sincerely, I hope the authorities will forgive. al-Zaidi must know where his stand is. He must not be someone who strengthen the militants. Iraqi people themselves have frustrated me the way they display their nationalism. Where do they want their country to head? To barbarism or a democratic set-up? Can we have one democratic country in an Arab world. A huge challenge. The mentality of the Arabs is mind-blowing.
