Use of LPG begins in Chin State of Myanmar

22 August 2009: Over one hundred families in Hakha, Falam and Thantlang towns in Chin state, western Burma have begun to use LPG for cooking.

The store sells a large gas cylinder and a stove for Kyat 180,000 and small ones for Kyat 170,000. Normally, a full gas cylinder can be used for three months. The replacement of a cylinder costs Kyat 37,000 for the large one and Kyat 29,000 for the small cylinder, a local in Hakha city said.

“LPG is better than using wood. LPG will become common in the state. A ton of wood costs Kyat 80,000 and a bag of charcoal cost Kyat 2,500. We used to spend Kyat 50,000 on charcoal per month. LPG costs less than charcoal. From another view point it can help stop deforestation,” he added.

There are 63 families in Hakha city, 20 in Falam town and 15 in Thantlang town using LPG.

The gas sold from Pa LPG Gas stove is what the Burmese government sold to Thailand, which was repurchased after refining. Although Burma has vast natural resources, the people cannot afford the valuable resources. The government sells gas to neighbouring countries. Only the elite in Burma and higher authorities enjoy the country’s natural resources.
